Leg Pain!!!

Published on Tuesday, July 4th, 2006 by Tien Yew

Ugh, I finally got myself off my butt and went running on Sunday, you know, to lose weight and get a healthy lifestyle.? But apparently I’ve been so out of shape that after running 3 km, I started to feel really nauseas and so I stopped.? Of course it didn’t help that I didn’t have breakfast before, haha, so it’s partly my fault anyway.? But the nausea went away pretty quickly only to be replaced by my poor aching leg muscles (what’s left of it after a year of slacking)!? Oh and it hurts with every step I take!? I wince with each step and just wanna give up every time I see a flight of stairs I have to climb.? Oh but I guess the pain won’t last for too long.? What worries me is whether I’ll have the discipline to continue this after I recover, which is in a few days thanks to lizzie’s massage last night!? Thanks lizzie!? I love you!

Online Fashion

Published on Wednesday, June 21st, 2006 by lizzie

When it comes to shopping, most people would still prefer to see/feel/try what they like, before actually purchasing them. But for visual people like me, show me a picture of a model in a gorgeous dress and I’m ready to buy it…even without actually physically seeing the item, much less try it. What am I talking about? Online Shopping. One of my all-time favourite hobbies…bane or boon I’m not quite sure. I’ve spent quite a fair bit shopping online, but I’ve also made a business out of it.

I started experimenting with online shopping 4 years ago, at Yahoo Auctions. I’m not very particular with second hand stuff, so I got lots of good buys at really good prices. Most of these clothes were new or had only been worn a few times. As such, I could get really nice pieces from all my favourite brands such as ZARA, Mango, Topshop, etc, at a fraction of the retail price. Other than yahoo, I started looking at other online fashion websites, like Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, Delias and my ultimate love: Victorias Secret. I just love Victorias Secret! They have really nice clothes/accesories/lingerie but as everyone knows, they also cost a bomb (and thats excluding the shipping costs to Singapore).

Being the shoppoholic that I am, I racked my brains for a way to get?this one particular dress?that I had been eyeing…at a much lower price. And I did…at ebay. After much sourcing and searching, I found this seller that was selling overstocked Victorias Secret items at reasonable prices. The only drawback was that the tags were snipped in half, to prevent people from returning them to the stores. Many of these pieces were new or had only slight defects like loose buttons or threads.?However, the shipping costs for just one item was very expensive and it?was cheaper if you bought more. I decided to buy a few pieces to lower the average shipping costs. And when the items arrived, I sold those I didn’t need in the local Yahoo Auctions…..and made quite a tidy profit. Thats was the start of my little Victorias Secret online biz.

Over the years, I brought in more and more pieces as my customer base grew. ?I conducted surveys to find out customers’ preferences and created a mailing list to inform them whenever I have new items. I have to say I’m very particular about good customer service and as a result, I have a pool of loyal customers who recommend me to their families and friends. Its a lot of work cos?its a one-man show. From the selection of every single piece, to the shipping, the packing, the uploading of all the pictures and descriptions, right down to delivery of the item, is done by me. But I enjoy doing this, simply because fashion is my passion. Definitely in the near future I would want to set up my own retail fashion business. For those of you who have read this article till this point and are interested in checking out my Victorias Secret items, you can go to my website! Happy browsing! 😀

Media Center Guide

Published on Tuesday, June 20th, 2006 by Tien Yew

So I haven’t been posting much recently once again, but with good reason of course.? I’ve finally got a full-fledged media center in my room!? Yeap, I’ve been working on it for the past few weeks and I’ve finally got everything working.? And so, since there IS a dearth of information on building your own media center computers, I’ve decided to post a little guide on getting Starhub cable to work with Windows Media Center Edition 2005.? Yes, I know I’ve posted something like this on my MSN Space some time ago but forget that.? That was just a temporary solution, this is the Real Deal.? Anyway, as far as I know, this solution works only on?my computer, they’ll probably work on yours, but?there are no guarantees.

Mental blank-out on Stage

Published on Tuesday, June 13th, 2006 by lizzie

It was raining last sunday. In addition to the cold and gloom, was the usual inertia one felt when the weekend?was ending. We had already performed on sat night for the Summer Dance Fit that was held outside the indoor stadium. We had just one more to go that Sunday evening, to end off the whole event. Tien yew and myself were rushing down from Parkway after dinner (and after a heated discussion on entrapment and infringement of personal rights…) for fear of being late for the performance. Everyone seemed a little listless and tired that night…so were we….

And halfway through our performance, our brains failed us. I knew the exact moment Tien Yew deviated from our choreo…when he was supposed to do a hamelock but somehow we ended up doing a cross body lead turn… Yup and we just socialled for like 4 or 5 sets? I didn’t think the audience noticed that we forgot the choreo…until Tien Yew tried to make me do a stunt…just which one?? Cos we have 3 stunts that have the exact same starting moves, so I couldnt tell which one he wanted me to do. I suppose that part was the most disastrous but somehow we had a spark of our usual telephathy and managed to do our signature tunnel stunt.

Its amazing how fast you can forget the entire choreo despite having done it countless times…Poor Tien Yew was so bothered by it but it didn’t really matter to me. Such things do happen and in a way I was glad that it happened then, since there weren’t many people present anyway. Nevertheless, it was a priceless experience. One that we can draw many lessons from.

Therefore, here are some tips which I hope might be useful when you forget your choreograph during a performance:

1) Social dance. Guys, pls have at least 10 variations which you can execute easily and well. Gals, if your guy forgets, don’t stone and stare open-mouthed at him. Just follow. He’s stressed enough having to remember the entire choreo, so don’t fly into a rage and blame him when he forgets.

2) Guys, if you forget but still want your gal to execute certain moves or stunts, tell her. Shout it/scream it,?cos it must register in her mind amidst all that panic (dont worry, the music is so loud that nobody will hear you holler). Don’t give her some eye power and expect her to interpret what you want her to do, unless of course you both have incredible telepathy. Give your stunts/moves names such that both of you can identify easily what you want each other to do.

3) Fake it. If you both forget and come to some awkward pauses/ moments, do something, anything in fact! Pose, pop, shimmy, comb, do whatever you can to make it look like the mistake is planned. The music is probably so fast that?the audience won’t catch it. Stoning is a dead giveaway.

4) Smile!! 😀 Haha this is something which I can’t do myself…yet… Yup most likely the audience won’t know that you screwed up your choreo if you don’t miss a beat (social!!) and smileeee (and i mean a Kodak smile). A frown on your face or sticking out your tongue will easily give you away.

Penny for my thoughts…

Published on Tuesday, June 6th, 2006 by lizzie

Lately there’s been a multitude of thoughts all crowding in my head, occupying whatever brain space that I have left…which is usually not much after work. By the time I shut down my office computer at the end of the day, the one in my head automatically switches off too. Usually I look forward to the end of the day, cos that means I can meet Tien Yew and we can go for dance. Dance had always been a way for me to relax and have fun after a taxing work day…but lately, I’ve been feeling more stress over dance than at work.

With the spate of training due to the string of performances over the past weeks, we’ve almost reached the brink of exhaustion. Working in the day and dancing at night, coupled with insufficient sleep and aching feet/muscles has taken its toil on both of us. Not to mention we argue over dance and that hardly helps. Tien Yew had already overstretched his arm from our last competition and with the continuous training, he hardly has time to rest it. And he refuses to tell me when it hurts, cos he doesn’t want to worry and disappoint me, but when I find out, I’m even more upset because he is definitely more important to me than dance.

As the months and days fly by, the thought of him going away next year, is always there at the back of my mind. It looms closer each day and the reality of it is starting to sink into me….Today is probably one of those melancholic days…

Back From the Break!

Published on Sunday, June 4th, 2006 by Tien Yew

Yes, I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted and that’s because I’ve been so tired after all the salsa practice, plus the internet at work’s down so I can’t post as and when I like, which is quite a bummer sometimes.? Bah,?and it?seems like no one cares about?the internet connection?except me, I don’t know what’s taking them so long.? Sheesh, just turn on the server for goodness sakes or?call the vendor or something.??It’s NOT THAT HARD!? And no, I can’t?do anything about it because?it’s not?within my purview.? Bah, stupid organisation with stupid hierarchies and rules.?

Anyway, we just had a performance on Saturday and boy was I tired.? We didn’t have dinner before it and we were training all the way since the afternoon so by the time we were doing our last number, we both felt quite faint.? Well anyway, this Saturday will be our last performance for some time, I hope.? And then maybe we’d take some time off training.? Did I not mention that we’ve been training almost everyday for the past months?? It’s even come to the point that I sometimes dread walking up the stairs to Xen just because of the thought that I’d be trudging, feet-heavy down.?

Anyway, it’d be good to take a break and spend some time with lizzie, I think we’ve both been equally sucked dry of energy.? Oh, and yes, I can drive!? Freedom!? Haha, well, almost anyway.? 6 months 30 days to TOTAL freedom.? Yeap.? 😀

New Driver in the House!

Published on Monday, May 29th, 2006 by lizzie

We have a newly certified driver in the house! Tien Yew just passed his driving test last Fri and he’s been happily driving me around in his dad’s car….with his dad in tow. So I’m sitting in the back seat with his mum and his dad is at the front giving him directions. Haha and his dad had assured me that this ‘probation’ period will last at most 2 weeks. Anyway I can’t believe anyone can pass with only 2 demerit points!! That’s obscene…and I thought my 10 points was not too shabby.

Well, I’m?really happy for him (and myself too hee..go figure :P) cos he can now drive to camp and not have to wake up so early.??And we were told there was going to be another dance performance on 10?June! We’re definitely not missing this one! 😉

Pulling out of the Performance

Published on Wednesday, May 24th, 2006 by lizzie

Its wed today, the day of the first performance. I should be excited but I’m not, cos we’re not going to be in it. Our decision to pull out of the performance was not easy and it was painful. But we were in such bad shape I didn’t think we would survive the intensive training. I was down with sore throat and a really nasty dry cough that left me in coughing fits in the middle of the night. I seem to have twisted my ankle too, cos it feels funny when I put my whole weight on it. Tien yew was nursing an overstrained arm?(due to all those stunts) and just as miserable with sore throat and flu.

?In addition, his driving practical test is this Fri and he has his Wed and Thurs evenings packed with driving lessons; which was as good as having no time to practice?at all. I don’t deny I’m a little disappointed but I would rather have Tien yew recovered and rested.

But that aside, we had a nice jap dinner at Sakae Sushi last evening and spent some quality time together. We probably haven’t done that for a while. So for this entire week, we’ll be hanging up our dancing shoes and hitting our beds a little earlier to try to get that elusive thing called Beauty Sleep.

Nevertheless I’m looking forward to seeing the rest perform on Fri outside the Indoor Stadium! We shall be part of the audience that night,?fascinated by those fast spins and flying salsa skirts. I already feel the urge to slip into my dancing shoes…and its only wednesday…*sighz*.. its going to be a long week…

Birthday Reprise

Published on Monday, May 22nd, 2006 by Tien Yew

Well my 20th birthday didn’t just fizzle away like that depressing post a few days ago.? Anyway, I’ll try to be optimistic about it.? Um…? I still can do everything I could (legally speaking)?when I was 19 and, well, nothing else actually.? Bah.?

Ok, being 20 sucks big time.? Oh, but wait, I got a Guess watch from lizzie which apparently cost her $200+ and I absolutely love it, and love her too, but that’s a given right?? And the presents didn’t just end there because she got me a book and a beautiful birthday card!? And lastly she brought these cute short fat candles to Bintan and attempted to light them up but unfortunately the air-con fan was a little too strong and we never got them all lighted.? But it was beautiful still!? Thanks lizzie!

And then I got myself an iPod Video – the 60GB one!? Yeap, now I can watch movies on the go and listen to the radio if I fork out another $88 and record people speaking (very useful for blackmailing hehe) if I import a microphone from the US because all the other microphones here only work for the previous iPods.? Anyway, these are things that I don’t have yet. *hint hint, there’s no bad luck in giving belated birthday presents*

Anyway, I’d really like to post pictures of?my?presents?here to spread the joy, so let me appeal to all you beautiful and benevolent people out there to get me a digicam so everyone reading this blog can get in on the joy!

Upcoming Performance

Published on Monday, May 22nd, 2006 by lizzie

After that gruelling week leading up to the Xenbar Comp, we were informed that we had to perform on the following wed (24/5) and fri (26/5) and that training intensity was up 3 notches. We were already feeling a bit under the weather and poor?Tien Yew is suffering from chronic lack of sleep. Still, I’m looking forward to each practice session cos I just love dancing with Tiew Yew.?:P Yup we wouldn’t have won second place?if not for him. We’re not just high on salsa; we’re also high on each other. And?I think that chemistry shows when we dance. ??
